Brick Walls

This post is filled with questions. I’ve been sick with the flu, got some great and bad news on the same day, and I just can’t stop thinking.
What drives people? What is it that gives people determination? Money? Fame? Sense of accomplishment? Passion? Responsibilities?
I was discussing this with a friend and we didn’t get anywhere, really. Every person has his/her own motives of doing what they do - every single day. Some more than others, but why?
Some people knock off those brick walls because they are so determined to get what’s behind it. And that is the point of them standing in our way, I believe. To see how bad you really want it. Would you fight for it? Or just let it go and find something else that is more convenient and requires less fighting for?
The question is, when does determination turn into obsession? How far can you go? How far would you go?

Hello Shay,
Sorry to hear of your flu. I’ve been busy with a number of sick relatives too
As for the issue you opened up today:
I peronally believe what drives a person is of two types:
1- Urgent or necessary needs that need to be fulfilled, in terms of self-preservation needs. Since its driven by the survival instinct. These needs, as set in Islam, are the need to perserve the mind, the life, the honour, the money, the offspring. If a threat faced any of these, a man will try his best to break any brick walls.
2- Once these needs are safe, i feel everything else goes under the heading of “Passion”. Fame, money, success, fun, etc, all has to reach the level of PASSION in the soul of the seeker, until he will have the strong drive to fight for accomplishing it.
I wonder what if your flu triggered such an issue

If it’s something that I am passionate about, then it’s worth fighting for in my case
I’d fly to the moon if it required… because passion is what makes you want to live… fight… and wake up every day and get out of your bed.
There’s something in this world to fuel the passion in each and every one of us. We just have to find it, and work from there.
If it’s real, then you won’t need motivation. Your heart will tell you not to stop.

Generally I lose interest in something if I see it to be a proven target of a large number of people. Thing is, I’m generally attracted to things that are almost completely personal, like drawing or writing, even reading (which is a tad hypocritical, except I say interpretation of text is something arguably unique for each person.)
I never really wanted to achieve something to the extent of obsession, unless you count my need to buy any PS2/3/P game that I think is coool-but those things are trivial.
I guess, I probably don’t take the next step that borders on obsession for things that really matter, my stance on it is, I’ve yet to find that something that will make me want to push through anything.

F.
Well, it’s the “pleasure” we get when we help others.

Someone called Abraham Maslow actually studied those questions and put them in a very pithy pyramid, check it out here:
