Girls in Tech – Kuwait

January 28th, 2009 § 14

I am very proud to announce the opening of a new chapter of Girls in Tech group, now in Kuwait!

Girls in Tech is a social network enterprise focused on the engagement, education and empowerment of like-minded, professional, intelligent and influential women in technology. As young women with the capacity to inspire, we made it our personal desire and passion to create and sustain an organization that focuses on the collaboration, promotion, growth and success of women in the technology sector.

Created in February of 2007, “Girls in Tech” (GIT) was founded by Adriana Gascoigne. GIT and was born out of a need to provide a place for women to cultivate ideas around their careers and business concepts involving technology.

Girls in Tech aims to offer a variety of resources and tools for women to supplement and further enhance their professional careers and aspirations in technology. Some of these resources include, educational workshops and lectures, networking functions, round table discussions, conferences, social engagements, and recruitment events.

We’re really excited to be expanding to the Middle East to empower, educate and provide resources for women and girls of all ages to excel in their courses and careers within the tech sector.

You can join the Facebook group through this link: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=63720120481
The official website is: http://girlsintech.net and it is due to launch later next week (inshallah).

So ladies in technology, young or old, in Kuwait or anywhere in the Middle East, join us today!

    That’s discrimination!

    Congrats smile

I haven’t seen a real good male geek committee, the open source one started strong for one or two weeks then stopped. It’s not male only anyhow, but males are like literally 100% there…

Good luck with the girls one. Just try to go easy on the pinky color, as its not techy and will fade it away :>

  • shaymaa says:

@Bashar, you said it yourself, the club you were at was 100% male, so how on earth is any woman supposed to join? Doesn’t work that way here, or anywhere around the world. :S
It’s not about discrimination, in the future we will collaborate with other people/groups to share the knowledge and IT projects.
Hehe, if the ladies want a “pretty in pink” theme party, then they are going to get one! rasberry
Thanks for the wishes! We are committed to making this happen!

  • Bashar says:

Well you women could’ve joined. Actually couple did for first time. Then one lady kept confirming about time, then she never came rasberry

Got assassinated maybe. Nothing personal you know. Just defending our kind of specie smile

  • BloggyLife says:

    YAY!

I’m sick of going to IT events in Kuwait and seeing no women!!

Don’t forget to advertise the events so I can come wink

  • nemo says:

    that is really cool

im going to check the website and the facebook group now

    thnx smile

  • outrageous says:

just a question are all girls in IT are suppose to be smart just cause they like technology ? and why they are called jeeks ?

  • shaymaa says:

@outrageous, no actually that’s not the case at all. The term “geeks” is slang for someone with an odd personality, especially those overly obsessed with computers. The term implies that they know how to work their way with technology but is not true in many cases.

  • outrageous says:

    Great info smile

  • Marzouq says:

Hopefully something such as this continues to expand! Always great to see something innovative in Kuwait!

  • shaymaa says:

@outrageous, we’d love to have you with us, email me if you have any questions. smile
@Marzouq, thanks, I hope so too.

    Update:
The new Girls in Tech site is now live! http://girlsintech.net/

  • Nosayba says:

    Hello there, Shaymaa! Nice blog.

Interesting news.. But Q: Is this related by any means to WIE (Women In Engineering) society?

I’m looking around to see examples of upcoming events to be carried here in Kuwait, is there a local calendar different than the one presented on the girlsintech.net website?

  • shaymaa says:

@Nosayba, welcome and thank you. If by “Engineering” you mean ”Computer Engineering” then yes, you are in the right place. GiT is a group for women in technology whether its their hobby or profession. It is our place to share ideas and host seminars covering various topics at different levels. So engineers, programmers, and/or gadget freaks – all are welcome!

Our events calendar will be up soon, I am seeking to find and recruit as many girls now. So do pass this on to your friends and do join us too.
